The big guy is trading backroads for subway lines — and he’s not thrilled about it. Reacher Season 4 is officially heading to New York City, and according to Alan Ritchson, it’s going to be his most dangerous mission yet. The Prime Video juggernaut has been keeping fans guessing about what’s next, but Ritchson just dropped a meaty hint on Instagram: a selfie showing him holding Gone Tomorrow — one of Lee Child’s most paranoia-fueled thrillers — along with a cheeky caption:

“The thing about subway cars is you step on one and you never know what’s going to happen.”

If you’ve read Gone Tomorrow, you know what’s coming: conspiracy, chaos, and a woman’s mysterious death that sets off a chain reaction of high-level cover-ups, deep-state operatives, and Reacher doing what he does best — smashing lies (and faces) to get to the truth.

The move to New York is a first for the series, which has previously kept Reacher on the fringes of American life — dusty towns, remote beaches, and corporate jungles. But Season 4 is flipping the formula. Based on Child’s 13th novel in the series, Gone Tomorrow begins with Reacher riding the subway at 2 a.m. when he notices a woman acting strangely. Seconds later, she’s dead. And the deeper he digs, the stranger things get.

This time around, the story brings Reacher toe-to-toe with black ops units, Pentagon secrets, and a plot buried so deep in the military-industrial complex even he might not make it out in one piece, unless he just punches his way out. It’s not just another bar fight in a sleepy town. Once again, the show is hopping around the chronology of Lee Child’s novels. Season 1 kicked off with Killing Floor (Book 1), then leapt ahead to Bad Luck and Trouble (Book 11) for Season 2 and Persuader (Book 7) for Season 3. Now, Gone Tomorrow (Book 13) joins the list, confirming that the creative team is picking the most action-forward and cinematic novels rather than following the strict timeline, which is fine, given that any of the Reacher novels can be picked up and read without much foreknowledge.

What Other ‘Reacher’ Novels Will Be Adapted?

While Reacher’s about to be knee-deep in underground government secrets, both Ritchson and Lee Child have already set their sights on what’s next. Child revealed to Business Insider that the novel The Midnight Line — a gripping mystery wrapped around the opioid epidemic — is high on his adaptation wishlist:

“The book that I am proudest of is The Midnight Line, which is about the opioid crisis, written from a very sympathetic point of view, from the addict’s point of view,” Child said. “And I do not know how that would play on TV, but that would be one that I’d be interested to see.”

Ritchson echoed the sentiment, saying:

“I do like that book. It’s fun watching the content of the books evolve. He started writing these in the ’90s. Some of the concepts that he tackles… He’s very progressive in these books… It’d be fun to tackle a more modern story.”
